Paris south of the river Seine...

Journal of a Trip to Paris –
the Memorial of Verdun and the Castle of Versailles. 

On the busride from the Odenwald to Paris we made a stop in the small town of Verdun.

In the nearer vicinity there is a vast soldiers field that commemorates the soldiers who left their lives in World War I.

In one of the main buildings on the grounds there is a bone-chamber. Looking through some of the windows you can see the skeletal bones of some of the 50,000 unknown soldiers.

In front of the chamber you will find a large cemetery with crosses placed in symetric order. Here you will probably encounter a ghostly atmosphere.

Spread all around Verdun are a great many reminders of the gruesom acts of war. Trenches, memorials and more graves.

If possible one should stop on the way to or coming back from Paris , in Versaille.

 The city has a population of about 100,000, and is entirely influenced by the delightful residence of the then- residing French Kings. Building the castle and the area around it required 30.000 craftsmen and 6,000 horses.

When you start your sightseeing at the Place dÀrmes in front of the Castle of Versaille it is a must to visit the chambers inside this grand building. Especially the famous Hall of Mirrors shows you the splendor with which every area was bestowed.

From the rear of the castle you have a magnificent view of the park, the Parc des Versailles. With it`s 800 hectometers it is valued as one of the best examples of French garden-architecture in the seventeenth century.

You can`t miss seeing two canals that are positioned like a cross. Looking further on you can see the Grande Canale behind the huge fountain Bassin d'Àpollon. The canal has a length of one kilometer.

To the right of the canals is the Grand Trianon and the Parc Trianon. Going east you will find the Petit Trianon in the Jardin du Petit Trianon.

Here you will find the little Temple of Love and a hunting pavillion; rumor has it that the queen used these buildings to receive her lovers....
